MARCH 2024: Inge Brinkman in meeting with a delegation of the Kenyan Embassy in Belgium at the Rectorate of Ghent University

Following our visit to Kenya (see below), UGent Rector Rik Van de Walle received a delegation of the Kenyan Embassy in Belgium.

MARCH 2024: HoWest introduces our project to Belgian minister Caroline Gennez

On Monday 4 March 2024 Belgian Minister of Development Cooperation Caroline Gennez visited UGent. Our Team member Megersa Regassa is second to the left on this picture next to the Vlir-Uos director, UGent’s Vice-rector, UGent’s rector, the Minister and fellow PhD students from Ethiopia and other countries.

Team member Gerti Wouters (HoWest) offered an introduction to our OL4D project to the minister, also in the presence of Inge Brinkman.

FEBRUARY 2024: Dr. Teshome Mossissa Egere on Oromia Broadcast Network(OBN)

On february 18 Dr. Teshome Mossissa Egere was interviewed on OBN (Oromia Broadcasting Network) in the program “Anaa Dhufu” (You’re Welcome).  From minute 28 he discusses our project.

FEBRUARY 2024: Visit of Inge Brinkman to Nairobi

Inge Brinkman visited the University of Nairobi in the framework of a visit to Kenya by UGent Rector Rik Van de Walle.: a wonderful occasion to strengthen existing collaboration and explore new possibilities for co-operation..

 

JANUARY 2024: Annual Report Year 1

In January 2024 our first Annual Report (September 2023-August 2024) was approved.

NOVEMBER 2023: Workshop with UGent students on Gikuyu folktale

We held an interesting workshop with students from the course ‘Introduction to African literatures’ of the African Studies Programme at Ghent University on the basis of the Gikuyu folktale ‘Wacici’. Soon more: check our webpublication page

OCTOBER 2023: Visit of Dr. Teshome Mossissa to UGent

All happy to welcome Dr. Teshome as our guest in October 2023.

  • Dr. Teshome offered a guest lecture in the course: ‘Introduction to African Literatures’.
  • With Prof. Vicky Van Bockhaven and Terefe Mitiku we went to visit the Department of Journalism at HoWest, Courtray. Gerti Wouters and Sander Van Nieuwenhuysen welcomed us and we learnt a lot on video-editing.
  • Together with Milkessa Edae and Terefe Mitiku, Dr. Teshome visited our home.

AUGUST 2023: Visit of Dr. James Wachira and Dr. Jennifer Muchiri to UGent

Happy to receive Dr. James Wachira and Dr. Jennifer Muchiri, both from the University of Nairobi, as guests to our African Studies section at Ghent University!

  • James Wachira is working for 3 months on the OL4D-Team project, whilst Jennifer Muchiri is meeting with various UGent representatives working in University management and internationalisation.

MAY 2023: Attending KWALE ARTS TROUPE PERFORMANCE

During our Team Annual Meeting we attended a performance by Young actors of the Kwale Arts Troupe turning a Digo oral folktale into a splendid theatre play.

MAY 2023: ANNUAL MEETING (Kwale/Diani, Kenya)

Between 21 and 25 May we held our Annual Meeting in Kwale/Diani, Kenya.

We learned a lot and enjoyed the meeting!

APRIl 2023:  Visit of Teshome Mossissa to Nekemte

  • Meeting with Dr. Melka Hika (Vice-President for Academic Affairs) of Wollega University.
  • Meeting with Dr. Teferi Terefe (Institute of Language Studies and Journalism)..
  • Meeting with Mr. Diriba Mamo (Head of Hachalu Hundessa Music School).
  • Meeting with the Director of Nekemte Comprehensive School.

APRIl 2023:  Hellen Kagotho and Tsehay Dinsa teaching

Tsehay Dinsa and Hellen Kagotho teaching on African oral literatures at Ghent University

MARCH 2023:  Visit of James, Hellen, Tsehay and Inge to Howest

On 21 March James Wachira, Hellen Kagotho, Tsehay Dinsa and Inge Brinkman visited HoWest in Kortrijk, Belgium.

  • We were hosted by Team member Gerti Wouters, Head of Department of Journalism.
  • After reception, they went for an introductory course on videofilming from Sander Van Nieuwenhuysen.
  • After this they met with Internationalisation Officer Katelijne Demeyere and listened together to a presentation on a project aimed at exploring new ways to engage young people with news.
  • Over lunch we discussed possibilities for cooperation and exchange, and after a fruitful day we returned to Ghent.

We express our gratitude to the hospitality we received at HoWest!

MARCH 2023: Hellen Kagotho and Tsehay Dinsa

Tsehay Dinsa and Hellen Kagotho are staying from February to May 2023 at Ghent University for their Ph.D. project. Here they are visiting the home of Inge Brinkman.

OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2022: Visit of Inge Brinkman to Jimma University

  • Meeting with Dr. Teshome Mossissa, Tsehay Dinsa, her husband, and Inge Brinkman.
  • Visiting Jimma Museum with Dr. Dheresa, Tsehay Dinsa, and Inge Brinkman.
  • Dinner party at the home of Tsehay Dinsa.
  • Inge Brinkman offering a public lecture at Jimma University.
  • The OL4D-Hub meeting at Jimma University, with all members present, on campus or joining online from Ghent.

SEPTEMBER 2022: Visit of Inge Brinkman to the University of Nairobi

  • Meeting with Peter Wasamba, Hellen Kagotho and Inge Brinkman.
  • Work-lunch with Peter Wasamba,  James Wachira, Kimingichi Wabende, and Inge Brinkman.
  • With Hellen Kagotho, James Wachira and Inge Brinkman: teaching on the parallels between folktales and ‘The avengers’ in St. Mary’s School in Nairobi.
